什么是Formal Writing？

  Formal language is less personal than informal language.It is used when writing for professional or academic purposes like university assignments.

  避免在学校作业或者assignment写作中使用非正式英文（Colloquial / Informal Writing），才能提高一篇正式书面文章的质量。

  而正式英语与非正式英语的差别，主要体现于单词的选择和语法结构。

1. Formal Writing的大禁忌

  不可使用口语表述／缩写／第一人称代词

  Formal language does not use colloquialisms,contractions or first person pronouns.

  colloquialisms 口语表达：

  非正式词汇，例如 a lot, count on, kid, how come，正式写作时需使用：significantly, expect, child, why。

  Contractions 缩写：

  例如"can't", "couldn't","etc"均不可使用。"can't", "couldn't"应该改成“can not”和“could not”。

  例子:

  "Fruits that are red are apples, cherries, lychee, etc."

  用“etc.”会让人觉得你有些懒惰，举例的时候用such as... 或者include... 这样的词会更加正式。

  正确示范：

  “Red fruits include apples, cherries, and lychee”

  First person pronouns 第一人称：

  论文中一般不使用 ‘I’ or ‘We’等第一人称代词以及‘You’等第二人称代词，以保证正式论文的客观叙述性。

2. 如何在Formal Writing里面表达“more”

  表达‘更’的时候，比起‘more’或者‘more and more’，使用形容词的comparative form更为适合。对于没有comparative form的词，则可将‘more and more’改成更为正式的词，例如‘increasingly’。简单的更换，会让你的论文或者assignment看起来更加地道。

  例子:

  － ‘more slow’，应用‘slow’的comparative form ‘slower’；

  － ‘more and more prominent’，prominent没有comparative form，则可替换为‘incresingly prominent’。

3. Acronym (首字母缩略词) 的用法

  使用Acronym的时候，切记只需第一次把该词/句的完整形式写出来，并接着括号加缩写。如此写完后，文中再提到该词就能直接用缩写。

  例子：

  ‘Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition’可以简称为‘DSM-5’. 即，在正式文章中第一次出现时，应写成'Diagnostic and Statical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition(DSM-5)'。

  这里要注意的是，每当使用缩写之后，就不再需要把它展开来写了。上学期改过的论文中，曾有同学将两种用法混着写。虽然可以理解大家想要追求语言多样性的心情，但这样的basic formatting error(基础格式错误)不会给你争取到任何分数，甚至会让marker觉得你并不了解指定的referencing style。

4. Formal Writing一定要简单明了

  通常论文不会因字数少被扣分，只会因为超字数被扣分。所以为了凑字数而故意用一些convoluted grammar(复杂语法)是不会加分的。凑字数写出来的东西真的特别明显，不仅影响分数，最坏的可能性是让你的论文被判定成non serious attempt。

  例子：

  修改前:"It is almost well-known to all the people that traditional students always acquired knowledge through going to school, and acquiring knowledge from teachers by face to face studying, or just read books by themselves at home, at school, at a coffee bar or any place which can provide them a quiet environment for them to read and think the ideas expressed in the book by themselves."

  修改后:"It is common knowledge that traditionally, students acquired knowledge mostly through going to school, and learning from teachers face to face. Reading books in a quiet environment that allows reflection of the ideas expressed in the book was also a common method of education."

  这句话66个词，小编把里面一些不必要的话去掉之后剩下44个词。句子的三分之一都是凑字数的，老师怎么可能看不出来？这样一来对这篇论文的印象也不好。
