        1. And so on & etc的用法

        中国学生特别喜欢在特定的例子后加一些so on或者 etc.  但这两个词组最好运用在所举出的例子是非常相似的情况下，这样读者能知道etc和 so on所指代的物品是什么.
        正确用法：Citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, etc.) are a good source of vitamin C.

        但是，如果所列举出来的物品并不是相似的，那读者就不能猜到etc 和 so on所代替的是什么. 比如就像接下来的例子
        正确用法: My extracurricular experience (as a volunteer, team captain, etc.) prepares me to work with my group members in college.
        错误用法: Eating a healthy diet has many benefits, such as increased energy, healthy skin, and so on.

        如果你是想例举并不相似的几个词组，用like or such as来进行介绍. 这样读者知道这仅仅是长名单的两项举例，读者并不需要了解其它的例子.
        正确用法: Penn’s science resources, such as their laboratories and student-run clubs, inspired me to apply. (使用scuh as的时候读者就能理解，列出的仅仅是一个更长的列表上的两相，不清楚地知道其他的例子也是OK的。)
        错误用法: I was inspired to apply to UPenn because of its science resources, like laboratories, student-run clubs, etc. (读者不知道列表上其他东西是什么, 所以 etc. 不适用）

2. Efficiency的用法

        中国学生喜欢用Efficiency来描述某方面（过程或者当下的情况）的总的效率与进步. 但是，在英语世界中，我们用 efficiency来表示对单独因素下面的效率，而且往往用在能够可计量的事情。
        错误用法：The factory’s efficiency improved.（这个句子所表达的意思太广泛了，到底是什么变的更加efficient？是更多的预算，或者收益提高了，或者说科技技术提高了，或者员工数量增加了？）
        正确用法: The factory’s efficiency improved, and they were able to produce 30% more widgets per hour.

        同时，在表达情感和与人接触的情况下，用efficiency会显得太过于呆板和程序化。
        错误用法: Joining a club is an efficient way to meet friends.
        正确用法: Joining a club is an effective way to meet friends.

        错误用法：Listening closely to my roommate helped me communicate more efficiently with her. (efficiency 在roommate 与人接触的情况下显得太没有人情味了)
        正确用法: Listening more closely to my supervisor helped me communicate more efficiently with him. (在工作环境下efficient是可以采用的)

3. Gradually/Started to的用法

        Gradually/Started to在很多情况下被中国学生滥用了. Gradually 和 started to都注重一个过程，有些情况下gradually和started to有过程比结果更重要的含意.

        举个例子，比较这两句话在意思上的不同：
        I started to learn how to ride a bicycle. (在这句话中，我们知道我之前还不知道怎么骑自行车, 所以用 started to)
        和
        I learned to ride a bicycle. (我已经知道怎么骑自行车了).

        这个例子可能有些直白，因为骑自行车是一个技能－你知道怎么骑自行车或者不知道. 但是如果是一个需要长时间来学习的一件事情了？比如，语言. 看一下这两个例子:
        In 2015, I started learning to speak Spanish. 
        （在这个例子里，这个人想表示自己在2015开始学习西班牙语. 但并没表示自己已经流利了，这个start to就是正确的用法，因为语言学习需要大量的时间.）
        In 2015, I learned to speak Spanish.
         (在这个例子，没有start to，那就缺少过程这个含意, 所以有start to会更恰当)

        但是，在讨论观念，爱好或者其它比较没有具体化的东西，用start to或者graudually 就不太恰当，反而会让句子变得没有方向性.
        错误用法：After I visited the campus, I started to be interested in going to Carnegie Mellon.（ 在这个例子里，我们不知道作者是否对Carnegie Mellon感兴趣，因为start to更注重过程而非结果.)
        正确用法: After I visited the campus, I became interested in going to Carnegie Mellon. (我们知道想要去Carnegie Mellon)

        错误用法: After seeing new earthquake-safe designs for skyscrapers, I gradually decided to become an engineer. (gradually更注重过程，用在这句句子中，句子意思就变成了我们无法知道我是否现在还是想成为工程师)
        正确用法: After seeing new earthquake-safe designs for skyscrapers, I decided to become an engineer.

4.Communicate vs. Talk的用法

        Communicate and talk 不是同义词.
        在日常生活中，如果用Communicate来表达和某人进行交流的话，这听起来很奇怪. 我们更推荐用talk， speak， discuss， converse来表达与人交流的目的.
        错误用法: I visited the professor’s office to communicate about the assignment.
        正确用法: I visited the professor’s office to talk about the assignment.
