        就词汇而言,影响高阶阅读效率的痼疾主要包括:一是抽象词和抽象词组,比如我们都熟悉bring A to B这一结构,但是当读到…bring to the competent clerical their congenial commentary这么个句子时,大多数同学就开始怀疑人生了,A部分的内容去哪儿了?to后面怎么是一串形容词?句子是不是写错了…其实就搭配而言bring A to B=bring to B A,而那一长串所谓的形容词则是我们在高阶阅读中极为常见却掌握不甚牢固的抽象词汇;又如Many critics of Emily Bronte’s novel Wuthering Heights see its second part as a counterpoint that comments on, if it does not reverse, the first part, where a “romantic” reading receives more confirmation.这一句话中的counterpoint和confirmation两个抽象词到底是什么意思也是一个值得仔细研究的问题;二是专业名词,如很多对文学无甚了解的同学面对…bring to Fyodor Dostoyevsky the brother Marazov…会完全懵掉;三是熟词僻义;四是大量同义词替换,限于篇幅,不再举例,我们会在另一篇文章里对理解抽象词和猜测难词的方法进行专门探讨。

        就语法而言,很多同学都普遍存在这样一种误区:语法对阅读这种信息输入型的考试没有实质性的帮助。我们当然认同以下观点:阅读考试中分析语法是浪费时间的行为。但是正如笔者一贯秉承的观念:任何英语考试(无论是国内四六级还是国外考试)的本质是Aptitude Test(能力测试),备考是提升英语语言能力的过程,不能纯粹执拗于所谓的技巧而因噎废食,故而在备考阶段熟练掌握常见复杂语法现象实则顺应提升阅读能力之要求。另外,从功利主义的角度出发,熟练掌握语法有助于摆脱“技巧悖论”(即得益于利用技巧猜答案之便利的同时又因基础不稳而受奴役于技巧之间的矛盾),甚至具有弥补词汇欠缺不足之功效。下面我们就正式进入对高阶阅读语法现象的升维训练。

        在高阶阅读特别是限时性任务型阅读中,出其不意的倒装不仅不能使中国学生体会写作者的精妙文笔,相反往往还会使得其瞬间迷失阅读思路。一般而言,倒装句的主要作用包括:一是表强调——将被强调的部分提前;二是为平衡句子结构避免头重脚轻,顺应英语修辞的尾重原则,将过长的部分后置;三是制造悬念渲染气氛,如朗费罗的著名诗歌《雪花》:Out of the bosom of the air/ Out of the cloud-folds of her garments shaken/ Over the woodlands brown and bare/…/Descends the snow.

        在高阶阅读中较为频繁出现的倒装包括:现在分词、过去分词、方位副词、介词、形容词放于句首所引起的较为简单的倒装;及物动词加介词变形所引起的较为复杂的倒装;及物动词加形容词变形引起的较为复杂的倒装。请看这句话:Implicit in it is an aesthetic principle as well: that the medium has certain qualities of beauty and expressiveness with which sculptors must bring own aesthetic sensibilities into harmony.形容词implicit和介词in出现在句首,很多同学在阅读这句话时,根本分不清主语到底是it还是an aesthetic principle,出现这中情况我们可以依次排除,如果是it在语法和语意上都讲不通,所以主语只能是后者,故而原句中的Implicit in it is an aesthetic principle as well= An aesthetic principle is implicit in it as well…

        Among the species of seabirds that use the windswept cliffs of the Atlantic coast of Canada in the summer to mate, lay eggs, and rear their young are common murres, Atlantic puffins, black-legged kittiwakes, and northern gannets.这是一个介词结构置于句首而引起的完全倒装现象,更为变态的是介词结构中还有一个其长无比的定于从句修饰seabirds,该句话的正常语序应该为:Common murres, Atlantic puffins, black-legged kittiwakes, and northern gannets are among the species of seabirds that use the windswept cliffs of the Atlantic coast of Canada in the summer to mate, lay eggs, and rear their young.

        Accustomed though we are to speaking of the films made before 1927 as “silent”, the film has never been, in the full sense of the word, silent.这是一个很简单的句子,但是由于Accustomed出现在句首,让同学们产生它和though成对出现的幻觉,可是这样的话,后面的we are to speaking显然是不符合语法的,所以判断we are accustomed to speaking of …是一个意群块,只是accustomed被提前以作强调而已,注意这句话中出现可一个比较抽象的插入语…,in the full sense of the word,…在阅读的时候,可以跳过。但是同学们看到这种句型结构也可以做笔记,要是哪天写essay的时候会用得到呢!

        Yet Walzer’s argument, however deficient, does point to one of the most serious weakness of capitalism—namely, that it brings to predominant positions in a society people who, no matter how legitimately they have earned their material rewards, often lack those other qualities that evoke affection or admiration.
        对于上述例子,我们应当分清yet在作连词的时候,是“然而、可是”之意,相当于but;Dash分隔符“—”在英文中的用法,通常是插入一个长同位语或者总结(Use a dash to set off an abrupt break or interruption and to announce a long appositive or summary),在由一个及物动词加上一个介词组成的词组中,如bring to,当其表达为bring A to B的时候,则有可能被倒装成bring to B A,本句中即使读者已经知道bring A to B=bring to B A这一存在,但是A和B的界限往往很难分辨,特别是很多同学竟然会把society people理解成“社会人”……,除此之外,who引导的定于从句里竟然还有一个很长的插入成分,导致连接代词who和从句谓语动词相隔甚远,影响阅读思路。按照笔者一直推崇的句子划分法,将本句话划分为:

        如果这句话恢复成正常语序,则是it brings people who, no matter how legitimately they have earned their material rewards, often lack those other qualities that evoke affection or admiration to dominant positions in a society.类似于这种容易在高阶阅读中被倒装的固定搭配,还有throw over、insert into、import into、infer from、establish for、advocate as等。

        Fredrich Engels, however, predicted that women would be liberated from the “social, legal, and economic subordination” of the family by technological developments that made possible the recruitment of “the whole female sex into public industry”.
        make+A+adj.这一基本结构中的A过长时,可以写成make possible A,读者如果能第一时间辨认出the recruitment…实则为A结构,那么这句话会不会一下就变得清晰无比了呢?
